Jon Rosenfield joined The Bay Institute as Conservation Biologist in 2008. Dr. Rosenfield began collaborating with The Bay Institute in the early 1990s when he worked as a Research Associate for the (then) Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund (now Earthjustice Legal Defense Fund) on litigation to protect delta smelt and winter-run Chinook salmon. More recently, Dr. Rosenfield assisted in development of The Bay Institute's Bay-Delta Ecological Scorecard, petitions to list longfin smelt as an endangered species, and litigation to protect endangered steelhead and Chinook salmon. Dr. Rosenfield has earned degrees from Cornell University, the University of Michigan, and the University of New Mexico where he studied evolutionary ecology and its implications for conservation of rare fish species. From 2002 through 2004, he explored population declines in longfin smelt and other native species as a post-doctoral researcher working with Dr. Peter Moyle at UC Davis. Dr. Rosenfield has served as the Director of Scientific Peer-review for the CALFED Ecosystem Restoration Program, California Coordinator for the Save our Wild Salmon coalition, and as a Board Member/lead organizer for the SalmonAID Festival. When he is not working to protect imperiled fish species and the ecosystems we all rely on, Jon enjoys sea kayaking, bike touring, rock climbing, and carpentry projects.
